If there is one team sport for yours truly to like, it has to be basketball. Having said that, there are quite a few good team sports out there in the real world, but well developed, fun and exciting basketball video games are few and far between. NBA 2K7 is probably as exciting as it gets as far as video games are concerned.
The NBA is big business in the US. In fact, it rivals our very own rugby mania in New Zealand except on a much grander scale. So, when you develop a video game based on a sport that is loved by so may, it probably pays to make sure you get it right. 2K sports have really done themselves (and the fans) proud with their latest instalment, NBA 2K7.
The game is set up so that you can choose from several different game modes, Quick play, 24/7, and Tournament to name a few. It might take you a while to get your head around all of the different game mode options, but Quick Game option is probably the most widely used and easiest game mode to play.
When beginning the game you are presented with a rather flashing and glitzy looking cut scene. The game’s soundtrack accompaniment should easily get your blood pumping. The opening soundtrack is old school rap artist’s Afrika Bambaataa with his 1980s hit Planet Rock. It’s definitely a great way to set the mood for the game. The soundtrack is superbly on par with the crystal clear graphics and polished presentation, but we’ll talk about the soundtrack a little later on.
There are so many different game mode options to choose from it could almost be considered overkill. The Quick Game mode is probably the easiest one to start off with if you're a beginner. Remember, though, if you get lost in the menus, the right thumbstick is your friend.
If you're new to sports games in general, never fear. The player control system designed in NBA 2K7 is developed well which means well enough for newbies too. It might take you a little while to familiarise yourself with the way the game works and the intricacies of controlling the ball and individual players on the court. But it won’t be long before you’ll be in full swing and jumping with the best of them.
In Quick Game mode, you still get to choose the teams you want to play with and against. And since this is the NBA, each team has a rank and utilises the ranking system. Some teams are obviously better than others and this is identified in the bottom half of the screen when you shuffle through the teams. If you're into that sort of detail, you should pay a visit to the official website. It will give you a lot of specific game related information about rankings, etc. You can also play in cooperative mode with two people on one team against the AI - a lot of fun.
