UPDATE: Blizzard has contacted Gameplanet to clarify the comments made by Micah "Bashiok" Whipple:
Bashiok’s response on Twitter was intended as a confirmation that we’re actively exploring the possibility of developing a console version of Diablo III, as we’ve mentioned in the past. This is not a confirmation that Diablo III is coming to any console platform. Our focus right now is on finishing the PC/Mac version of Diablo III and making sure it’s a worthwhile successor to the Diablo series.
ORIGINAL: Blizzard has confirmed that it intends to release action-RPG Diablo III on consoles.
When asked to confirm or deny that Diablo III would be coming to consoles, Blizzard’s community manager, Micah “Bashiok” Whipple, said, “Yup. Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project.”
A console version of Diablo III has been openly discussed by Blizzard in the past. Diablo III director Jay Wilson said in November, “People don't believe us when we say we're going to make a console game – flat out. We haven't officially announced a product. We say that because we like our product announcements to be a big deal. We haven't been as secretive about this one because our biggest barrier is actually getting a console team.”
Diablo III for PC and Mac is coming “early 2012.”
