Visceral Games have announced this morning that a playable demo of Dante’s Inferno will be available on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in December.

The ‘Gates of Hell’ demo will allow players to control the namesake character, Dante Alighieri, as he descends from the surface to the threshold of Hell in a battle that will culminate in an encounter with Death.

From the developers of Dead Space, Dante’s Inferno is an adaptation of The Divine Comedy, written by the protagonist’s real-life Italian counterpart in the 14th century. As you can see, Dante has spent the intermediate centuries in the gym, buffing out his bookish physique in preparation for his videogame debut.

“Our main goal from the start of this project has been to create a journey that will make gamers truly feel like they are going through hell,” said executive producer Jonathan Knight. “The demo will give everyone some insight into how we are treating the story and a taste of the gameplay.”

After defeating Death in December, Dante will travel through the nine circles of Hell: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery in early February. The game will also be available on the PSP.
