Grand Theft Auto V is officially the fastest-selling game in the history of the series, and could go on to be the fastest-selling video game ever.
Publisher Take-Two Interactive has announced that the game’s sales exceeded US$800 million on its first day on the market.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II is the fastest-selling game of all time, and it gathered US$500 million at launch and took just 15 days to reach US$1 billion in sales.
By contrast, the fastest film to US$1b is Avatar, which took 17 days to reach that milestone.
"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V," said Take-Two chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick.
"Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence."
According to GfK Chart Track data, Grand Theft Auto V had the biggest UK launch figures in history, selling 1.57m units and generating over £65m in revenue in the process.
The previous record holder was Call of Duty: Black Ops, which sold 1.41m units for £58m back in November 2010.
