Blizzard's online hero-shooter Overwatch has reached a player base of more than 10 million, the publisher announced this week via the game's Twitter page.

The figure includes all platforms, with no breakdown of sales between PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and covers the first three weeks of the game's release.

By comparison, Blizzard's MMO World of Warcraft took over three years to reach a player base of 10 million, though the MMO and FPS genres differ in popularity to begin with.

Overwatch's success comes even as one of its principal competitors, Gearbox's Battleborn, sees its own player base dwindling.

Gameplanet's Baz McDonald scored Overwatch 9/10, citing "amazingly addictive gameplay" and "an interesting, distinctive cast."

Further updates to the game are in the works, including new heroes, new maps, and a competitive play mode.
