A remastered version of Skyrim is making its way to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, Bethesda confirmed at its E3 showcase today.

The long-rumoured Skyrim Special Edition will bring enhanced art and effects to the latest generation of consoles, including new water and snow shaders, screen space reflections, atmospheric effects and more.

Originally released in 2011, the fifth entry in The Elder Scrolls franchise saw numerous DLC releases as well as a healthy mod community on PC. The Special Edition will support full PC mods on console.

The announcement will be particularly good news for PS3 owners, who suffered through latency and framerate issues with the original release.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition will release October 28 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Update: PC players who own Skyrim and all of its add-on content on Steam will receive the Special Edition as a free upgrade, Bethesda has tweeted:
