Sony has mandated that all PlayStation 4 games must support the Vita’s Remote Play function.

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news on Twitter, adding that “it’s true unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera [PlayStation Eye]”.

According to a Eurogamer source, Cross Play between the PlayStation 4 and the Vita will downscale the 1080p framebuffer to the Vita’s native 960×544 resolution, using the PlayStation 4’s in-built hardware h.264 video encoder to compress the image.

The image is then transferred to the Vita via Wi-fi, enabling PlayStation 4 games to be played on the handheld.

Remote Play is possible between the PlayStation 3 and Vita, but few games support it.
