Ubisoft Toronto has revealed that Michael Ironside was dropped as the voice of Splinter Cell protagonist Sam Fisher because he didn’t have the physical attributes required to act the part.
"The problem that we faced was that we needed someone to play Sam that was not only the voice but also had the physicality that Sam Fisher has,” said Béland.
“That's why we had to go with an actor that was able to do that, so we found Eric Johnson."
For prior Splinter Cell games, Ubisoft had one actor play the body of Sam, Ironside voice him, and developers animate his face.
However, it went with full performance capture on the upcoming Blacklist.
"On Blacklist we knew that we wanted to raise the bar of our scripted events, of our cinematics, and to do that we knew we had to go to performance capture,” said Béland.
“We have a camera that's recording all the facial animations so right there, because you're capturing a true actor's performance, and the level of quality is raised instantly.”
Splinter Cell: Blacklist is due out on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows PC, and Wii U on August 23.
