As it did at last month's Design Innovate Communicate Entertain (DICE) awards, Journey won basically everything at last week's Game Developers Choice Awards.

Thatgamecompany's unusual adventure title took home Game of the Year honours and the Innovation Award at the 13th Annual Awards at GDC, and also racked up wins in four other categories.

Three special honours were handed out on the night, each selected by the Game Developers Choice Awards advisory board.

A Lifetime Achievement Award went to BioWare founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, whom the board felt had made an indelible impact on the craft of game development and games as a whole.

The Pioneer Award – which celebrates individuals who paved the way for those who followed them – was given to Steve Russell, who invented SpaceWar! in 1962.

The Ambassador Award, which honours an individual who have helped the game industry advance to a better place, was given to Java community figurehead and gaming history fanatic Chris Melissinos.
