EA has confirmed that SimCity will be sold across multiple digital distribution platforms, but that all players will be required to connect to its online service, Origin, to play the game.
EA says the always-on connection is necessary due to multiplayer and the player’s impact on the game’s global economy, reports Joystiq.
Additionally, there will be no mod support for SimCity out of the box, but developer Maxis says that such functionality could be added at a later date.
“The reason people are still playing SimCity 4 almost ten years later is because the modding community essentially re-created it and filled it with new content and fixed bugs and made it as much of a hobby as it is a game,” said creative director Ocean Quigley. “We’re very cognizant of that — we’re not idiots.”
