Images leaked from a confidential PowerPoint presentation show a prototype version of Left 4 Dead 2’s Plantation level built using Valve’s upcoming Source 2 engine.
The images represent the public’s first look at the upgraded capabilities of the new engine, including much more object detail, and upgraded lighting and shadows.
The presentation was leaked by CBOAT, a perennial source of Valve insider information.
Source 2 will include "simple, automatic compiling of content", a "powerful GUI front end for content authoring", "can be easily extended with custom and pre-game assets" and has a "browser for quickly finding, managing, editing assets", read various slides in the presentation.
Valve boss Gabe Newell confirmed that the company was working on Source 2 in November 2012.
In October 2013, Valve Time posted an image indicating that 90 personnel were assigned to developing Left 4 Dead 3, including Left 4 Dead series writer Chet Faliszek, Counter-Strike co-creator Jess Cliffe, Splinter Cell and Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking, and System Shock and Thief designer Doug Church.
