An online petition is requesting that Avalanche Studios change the nationality of its leading voice actor on Mad Max.

The game was unveiled at E3, and to the dismay of some features an American actor voicing the titular Max.

Mel Gibson, who was born in New York but spent his teenage years living in Australia, played Max in all three Mad Max films in the late seventies and early eighties.

George Miller, who was born in Australia to Greek immigrants, directed the films.

AusGamers was told by the developers that they wanted a “generic” American voice actor in the role, and subsequently set up the petition to get an Australian voice actor on board instead.

Mad Max is an important part of Australian cinema and pop-culture history. However, the series is as equally important worldwide, and is arguably one of the most recognisable and referenced post-apocalyptic tales ever told,” it reads.

“The titular hero, Max, was played by Mel Gibson whose Australian heritage came across as a gruff, stoic and hardened portrayal of a man who'd lost everything, but still had a sense of hope.”

The petition has 1683 signatures at the time of writing, with AusGamers aiming for 2500.

English actor Tom Hardy will play Max in upcoming sequel Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mad Max is coming to Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One next year.
