Gameplanet recently ran a competition to win a new gaming PC rig together with Metro: Last Light.
Entries were taken in the form of Metro weapon designs.
Contestants were asked: If you were stuck in the post-apocalyptic Moscow Metro system, what kind of weapon would you cobble together?
Entries were judged on their relevance to the world of Metro: Last Light, their practicality, and their innovation or humour.
The number and quality of the entries blew us away, so well done everyone who participated. Bayonets were popular, as were nuclear reactors, vodka, and guns that could shoot recycled garbage.
Here are the entries we thought were particularly good:
Nominations For Practicality
FiredogNZ’s Rail Spike Crossbow
Lord_Montgomery’s Coil Blaster
Lankinator’s Dire Extinguisher
Filthy88’s car door contraption
...and Head/Hedge Trimmer
Nominations for Amusement
Wurp’s Rocket-Propelled AK47
Beastman’s The Inebriator
The best ad Kristov never ran:
Beastman’s Unicycle Sausage Nav
Wouldn't it be rendered useless the moment we ate the sausage?
Ghostunit’s “It’s Okay To Be Metro”
A stunning portrait of Gameplanet editorial director James Cullinane:
Notnorton’s devastating Metro Token
Generally Awesome
theZAT's Iron Man suit with self charging boots
Wilstyle’s Prick of a Thing
Bonus points for resembling a Nintendo Powerglove:
Jamesstringer’s HUOT 1916 Mod
We suspect Jamesstringer might have actually built this thing and then photographed it:
REDZONE placed his turret directly into the game
Psemaj’s Pyrolectic is just all-round badass
The Finalists
Dropside’s Rabid Rat Launcher
This entry impressed the judges with its elegant all-in-one solution to both Metro's rat and mutant problems.
Lukeappleby’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard
The Ol’ Dirty Bastard also dazzled with its unique ammo, USB 5.0 port, and sweet design.
Seanhinton’s Crossbow/Shotgun/Axe...
Seanhinton submitted several very inventive and beautifully drawn entries, but we particularly liked his three-in-one Crossbow/Shotgun/Axe – the weapon for any occasion.
Apparently taking inspiration from his toolshed, Seanhinton also drew a grenade launcher based on a jackhammer, a flamethrower based on a paint gun and a machine gun based on a cordless drill – and a shop to sell them all. Nice.
Ninjamie’s hurricane catapult
An awesome idea, expertly drawn, Ninjamie’s Hurricane Catapult took full advantage of the Metro's junkyard, as well as our fondness for bolas.
And the winner is...
Hypron’s Multi-Barrelled Bicycle Shotgun!
A great design that looks far too feasible for our liking, Hypron's Bicycle Shotgun is simple yet gloriously demented. It fits the design brief perfectly, and it will be scandalous if 4A Games doesn't immediately release it as free DLC for the game.
Well done Hypron! Your new gaming rig is on the way!
