Torment: Tides of Numenera has smashed Kickstarter records mere hours after starting its fundraising campaign.

The Planescape: Torment “thematic sequel” took only six hours to clear US$1 million in pledges, easily beating out previous record-holder the Ouya, which took eight hours and 22 minutes.

The game’s goal was US$900,000, but a day in it has almost cleared the US$2 million mark.

"Our heads are still spinning at the incredible response we have had from today's support of our Kickstarter campaign," wrote the development team.

"We had plans to roll out our stretch goals and to write our Kickstarter updates but never in our wildest dreams did we think we would fund this quickly."

Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single player isometric story-driven RPG, being developed at inXile entertainment.

That studio also had massive Kickstarter success with Wasteland 2, which more than tripled its US$900,000 goal in April last year.

Tides of Numenera will run on the Unity Engine, and is being developed for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.

The game was announced in January this year.
