Blizzard eyed free-to-play as an option for StarCraft II’s multiplayer mode, says lead designer Dustin Browder.
According to Browder, the main issue holding Blizzard back was that it is unsure how to monetise the game without breaking its delicate balance.
“We don’t know how we would monetise it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them,” he said in answer to a fan question at the Valencia eSports Congress.
StarCraft II expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void are yet to be dated for release.
