There is a sliver of a chance that City of Heroes may avoid its impending shutdown.

It has been revealed that the management team of Heroes developer Paragon is in discussions with NCsoft and investors over the fate of the eight-year-old MMO.

Players were informed of the news via an in-game message yesterday.

COH community manager Andy Belford acknowledged the message, but asked fans not to get too worked up over it.

“I want everyone to please temper their expectations with the word ‘discussions’. Please, don't take this to mean more than it does, at this point in time, he wrote on the game’s forum.

A petition to keep the game’s servers running had just over 14,000 signatures at the time of writing.

Last week it was announced that Paragon had closed, and that the superhero MMO would shut down on September 30.
