Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet has suspended around 3,000 players for participating in a potentially game-breaking exploit.
The glitch allowed players to purchase extremely low valued items at a vendor, and sell them on for a substantial profit. This in turn damaged the Guild Wars 2 economy, culminating in ArenaNet's heavy-handed approach.
Lead Producer Chris Whiteside later posted on Reddit: “We take our community and the integrity of the game very seriously, and want to be clear that intentionally exploiting the game is unacceptable. The players we banned were certainly intentionally and repeatedly exploiting a bug in the game.
“We intended to send a very clear message that exploiting the game in this way will not be tolerated, and we believe this message now has been well understood.”
Initially reported as permanent, players can plea bargain their way down to a 72 hour ban provided they delete all ill-gotten items procured through the exploit. This process is explained here.
