‘Malion’ is the winning entry in Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Folkore Design a Folk competition, which ran on eu.playstation.com from 28 September.
Forum members were challenged to design a new character for PS3 mystery action adventure Folklore - a game populated by mysterious creatures known as Folk. The winning entry is currently being made up by the team at Game Republic and will be available to download exclusively from PlayStation Store in early 2008.
The panel of judges at Game Republic Studios in Tokyo decided that the winning entry was from Jeff Rfrom the UK, but it was close-run with four runners-up coming from France (Chengelin), UK (Legia), Australia (Mordremohrg) and Spain (Nrise). Read's winning design is ‘Malion’. “The Malion (Spore Lion) runs circles around the enemy whilst creating an intoxicating spore cloud from its tail and thorny mane. When the prey is dazed the Malion jumps in for the kill. The tail and claws are (sic) primary attacks, but this Folk is highly poisonous... The Malion fears fire." Malion will now get to star alongside the likes of gelatinous Agar Agar, the spike-furred Bug-a-boo, the boulder-bodied Spriggan and the cavern-mouthed Fomoire in Folklore.
The winner gets Malion immortalised in the PS3 game.
