PS4 owners hoping to spend their Christmas break in Path of Exile will have to make other plans – the game's release has been delayed to early February.

"We underestimated the amount of work it would take to finish the certification process during the busy Christmas period," said developer Grinding Gear Games.

"While we hope to have everything ready in January, we feel a lot more comfortable promising early February as a target release window."

Grinding Gear also noted that the extra time will be spent working on performance and frame rate, which it feels "could be improved before release."

While the PS4 version was announced earlier this month, the action RPG has been available on Xbox One for over a year.

The game has enjoyed success on PC since its open-beta in 2013. That success is likely to continue as snubbed Diablo fans seek an alternative dungeon crawler.
