The news of today's acquisition of the TimeSplitters IP by THQ Nordic will be music to the ears of many.

Fans have been crying out for a new TimeSplitters game for years, ever since developer Free Radicals shut down back in 2008.

Featuring time travelling elements and a comic book-inspired design, TimeSplitters produced a trilogy of games between 2000 and 2005.

In its time, Free Radicals was comprised of numerous Rare veterans, many of which were responsible for shooter classics like Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark.

The purchase was made by THQ subsidiary, Koch Media.

“We are hugely excited to have acquired Timesplitters” said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz. “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the Timesplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill todays gaming audience.”

In addition to TimeSplitters, Koch Media also acquired the rights to Free Radical's Second Sight, a sci-fi action adventure title based around a parapsychologist working alongside the U/S/ Marines.

While there's no confirmation that new entries into either series are in the works, it's certainly a step in the right direction. It's not like a company would purchase an IP just to have it sit on the shelf... right?
