Gearbox Software's next game will be a new game in the Borderlands series, CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed.

"It's no secret - obviously there's going to be another Borderlands," Pitchford said in a panel at PAX East on the weekend.

"We don't even know if we're going to call it that. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know," he joked.

The game will actually be the sixth game in the Borderlands franchise, after the two numbered games, 2K Australia's The Pre-Sequel, Telltale's Tales From the Borderlands, and mobile game Borderlands Legends.

It will be written by Gearbox chief creative Mikey Neumann, and art-directed by Battleborn's Scott Kester.

Pitchford and Battleborn creative director Randy Varnell went on to suggest that DLC for Battleborn could contain easter eggs for upcoming Borderlands titles.

Given the pre-pre-production stage of development, no release window was speculated upon.
