Following its accidental reveal last week, System Shock 3 has been officially announced by developer Otherside Entertainment.

Though no gameplay has been shown, some details have emerged.

AI antagonist SHODAN will return, with voice acting by original actor Terri Brosius, while original System Shock concept artist Robb Waters and development lead Paul Neurath are on the team as well.

Most intriguingly, in order to sign up for project updates, players must fill in a survey that includes a question about their interest in a virtual reality System Shock game.

The last game in the series, System Shock 2, was released in 1999, with only re-releases and spiritual successors emerging since then.

Speaking to GameInformer, System Shock 2 lead designer Ken Levine said of the new title, "I'm excited, I hope they can figure it out and make a cool game out of it."

Like the System Shock franchise, Levine's as yet untitled new game involves "themes like artificial intelligence and what it means to be programmed," and "how much agency you have outside of what you are as a piece of programming instructions."

System Shock 3 is currently undated and unplatformed.
