Trine developer Frozenbyte has revealed its next game, a stealth adventure called Shadwen.
Apparently taking cues from Thief, Shadwen is set in a quasi-medieval world, and follows the title character, "an assassin on a quest to kill the king."
Shadwen is accompanied by a young orphan girl, and she must decide whether to let her witness acts of violence, hide them from her, or avoid violence altogether.
Gameplay follows traditional stealth principles of sight and sound, with the addition of a mechanic similar to upcoming indie Superhot, in which time stands still unless Shadwen moves.
She can also use grappling hooks and rope to move around the environment and/or set traps for enemies.
The Helsinki-based developer says the game is a reaction to the fact that "the stealth genre has been in a slump for years."
"Guns blazing and invincible heroes is not stealth. Yearly revisions like sports roster updates is a crap way of doing games," said CEO Lauri Hyvärinen. "Shadwen will bring the genre back to its roots, with sneaking and hiding the main course of action. We will also explore the moral consequences of killing through our characters."
Shadwen will release in 2016; a pre-alpha sneak is available to Humble Monthly subscribers.
