Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has reiterated that the company's upcoming NX console will be a break from established Wii and Wii U ideas.

In an interview with Time, Kimishima described the console as the "next step in our dedicated device strategy, the core and primary focus of our business."

However, far from being just another step, he stressed that Nintendo is "not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It's something unique and different."

Citing the difficulty in convincing players to move from the Wii to the Wii U, Kimishima said a fresh start with the NX was important.

"It's something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base."

No details about the upcoming console were revealed – Kimishima even said that "as for the codename NX, I don't believe that there's any real meaning behind it."

Kimishima also talked about Nintendo's mobile strategy, saying that though the company had not communicated it properly yet, its overall goal is to "increase the gaming population."
