The original Fallout is being remade inside Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, courtesy of an enterprising group of modders.
Fallout 1: The Story is a work in progress, aiming at entirely recreating the 1997 original game.
Movement, combat, and dialogue are handled in first person, while each gameplay area is discrete and accessible via an overworld map, as in the original.
Random encounters can even trigger during transit between locations.
The modders claim Vaults 13 and 15 are complete, Shady Sands is nearly complete, and Junktown is halfway there, while The Glow, Necropolis, and The Hub are only in the beginning stages of construction.
Videos of the mod in action can be seen on one of the modders' YouTube channel, temp voice acting and all.
Fallout was released in 1997, followed by numerous sequels, and saw the player leaving their Vault to find a water chip that could curb an imminent water shortage.
