A film adaptation of the Witcher series has been set for a 2017 release.

The live-action film will be directed by Polish Oscar nominated short filmmaker and animator Tomasz Baginski, written by Buffy and Grimm writer Thania St. John, and produced by The Sean Daniel Company, best known for the Mummy series.

Intended as the first of several of cinema and TV adaptations, it will "follow the themes" of the short stories The Witcher and The Lesser Evil by creator Andrzej Sapkowski.

The latter story is the one in which title character Geralt earns the moniker "The Butcher of Blaviken."

Baginski has previously worked on cinematics for the first two Witcher games, and directed the Cyberpunk 2077 teaser for CD Projekt Red.

The last film to be based on the property, 2001's The Hexer, was met with extremely negative reviews.

When asked about the 2001 film, Sapkowski said at the time, "I can answer only with a single word, an obscene, albeit a short one."

CD Projekt Red has not been listed as involved in the new project.
