Valve Software, soon to launch its first hardware, wants some of that hardware to be modded by users, just like its software.

Speaking to PC World, Valve's Robin Walker noted that "We’re just about to hit the point where customers get their hands on it which, to us in the software world, that’s where stuff starts to get really interesting."

"What does a mod of the Steam Controller look like? I don’t know. But I think in a year we will know, and it’ll be awesome," he said.

"It would be the first time our customers didn’t improve one of our products if, for some reason, they couldn’t make the hardware better."

Valve has been very open about the controller's development, and about the fact that the released design won't even be its final form.

For example, Walker told Engadget the company would like to ditch the thumbstick, which was added to ease the transition to the controller's trademark touchpads, and restore the first prototype's clickable touchscreen.

The first release version of Steam Hardware lands November 10th.
