A member of a gamer/hacker group responsible for a number of SWAT attacks has been sentenced to prison.

22-year-old Matthew Tollis was arrested last year after an incident resulted in a three hour campus-wide lockdown at the University of Connecticut.

At the time, he was a member of a hacker and Xbox gaming group that has gone by the names ISISGang and Team Crucifix Or Die.

Like other groups such as Lizard Squad, TCOD used Skype to make hoax bomb, hostage, and shooting threats to police, in order to harass other gamers by having SWAT teams called to their homes, schools, or businesses.

Tollis admitted in court to having sourced phone numbers and scouted locations for swatting attacks, including the Boston Convention Centre, Boston University, and three high schools.

He will serve one year and one day in prison, starting November 5th.

"Swatting is not a schoolboy prank, it’s a federal crime," said U.S. Attorney Dierdre Daly of the dangerous and increasingly common practice.

"These hoaxes have expended critical law enforcement resources and caused severe emotional distress for thousands of victims."
