Humble Bundle is adding a subscription service, Humble Monthly, to its offerings.

The Humble Monthly service will cost US$12 a month, and will deliver subscribers a handful of mystery games on the first Friday of every month.

Humble Bundle executive Robert Bowling explained that the service is somewhat similar to a book of the month club.

"We spent a lot of time with developers and publishers to walk through the value of having a large group of people dive into your game every month at the same time,” said Bowling.

“It really allows for some unique marketing opportunities, much like a book club, where you know you have a set number of people being introduced to your community at the same time."

The selection has been planned for the next six months. However, Bowling said Humble is open to curating months with developers to coincide with gaming events.

"We really like to balance out the variety of games in each month," Bowling said.

"To give the player a 'taste test', if you will, of games we know they'll love while also capturing something they may have never expected."

Unlike the Humble Indie Bundle, consumers will not be able to choose how their money is distributed with the Humble Monthly service. Five percent of the subscription fee will go to charity, with the rest distributed under Humble’s purview.

"This allows us to negotiate set terms with each developer based on the amount of subscribers we have," Bowling said.

"This is a very different approach than pay-what-you-want promotions where it's more about generating an audience of hardcore fans which then also comes with a nice boost in revenue, albeit an unknown amount since it's pay-what-you-want."
