Survival horror game Soma has sold 92,00 copies in its first week.

In a Facebook post, developer Frictional Games revealed that the game generated enough from first week sales to cover the company’s expenses for the next two years.

The studio outlined that the game’s sales goal was 100,000 copies in the first month – a milestone it is well on the way to achieving.

However, Frictional isn’t close to recouping the costs of the game yet, with sales needing to be roughly three times what they currently are to achieve this.

“How does this compare to our other releases? Well, Amnesia: The Dark Descent sold 30,000 copies in the first month (and around 20,000 the first week),” the studio wrote.

“So SOMA's launch is obviously a lot better than that.

“Compared to Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, though, the launch is a little bit worse,” it added.

“That game sold about 120,000 copies the first week.”

Frictional also revealed that the release of a new title reduces the sales of previous games from the company instead of drawing new customers to their old games.

SOMA currently has an OpenCritic rating of 84 and a Steam rating of 94 percent.

Gameplanet’s Chris Brown gave the game a score of 6.5 saying that “it’s far too inconsistent to rise above the ocean of existing ideas it’s drowning in”.
