Developer Twisted Pixel announced today that the studio will split from Microsoft and return to its indie roots.
The Texas studio is probably best known for quirky platformer [i]’Splosion Man/i], and following the release of that game’s sequel, it was acquired by Microsoft in 2011.
Twisted Pixel co-founder Josh Bear explained that the arrangement with Microsoft was a “minimally integrated” structure, giving them the option to return to an independent status if the time was right.
Microsoft Studios has published six Twisted Pixel titles including the award-winning Xbox 360 game The Maw, along with Comic Jumper, Ms. ‘Splosion Man, The Gunstringer and LocoCycle.
“This transition has been in the works for a few months, with both parties working together to lay the groundwork for us to spin out and become independent again,” said Twisted Pixel executive producer Bill Muehl.
“We’re looking forward to the new relationships and platforms this will open up to us and continuing our strong partnership with Microsoft on future titles for their platforms.”
