The Electronic Sports League has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited substances list, according to a Reddit post by the ESL's Anna Rozwandowicz.

The eSports organisation's PR and comms boss confirmed that random saliva tests will take place during tournaments, and that punishments will range from deduction of prizes or points to disqualification and bans.

Exceptions may be made, however, to players with legitimate medical prescriptions for the substances.

The ESL has been looking into doping ever since Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player Kory Friesen admitted his team used Adderall during a pro event.

Adderall's ingredients are among the many substances listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency's lengthy banned list.

Generally speaking, physically-enhancing drugs like anabolics, metabolics, and growth hormones are banned at all times, with stimulants, narcotics, and cannabinoids additionally banned during competition.

Moving to ban performance-enhancing substances brings eSports more in line with more traditional sports.

"It is a small, but in our eyes essential and meaningful step forward for professional gamers across all games, ESL as an event organizer, and the esports industry as a whole," said Rozwandowicz.
