Software for the new generation of core consoles is selling faster than that of the previous generation, according to an exec at research firm EEDAR.

In an article at GamesIndustry, Electronic Entertainment Design and Research VP of Insights Patrick Walker compared the two generations' first three years.

For each of the three years after their respective launches, PS4/XO software sales have been higher than the PS3/X360's equivalents.

When you include Nintendo software sales, though, the numbers flip, thanks to the original Wii's runaway success and the Wii U's disappointing performance.

Despite the Wii U's widely-praised software and innovative hardware, it is believed that many of the casual players the Wii won over moved on to mobile games rather than another console.

Many have speculated that this console generation will be the last of its kind, with cloud-based offerings set to take over in the future - but if it is, it's going out with a bang.
