Square Enix was prepared for and expected backlash over Rise of the Tomb Raider's Xbox exclusivity, says CEO Phil Rogers.
Speaking with the Examiner, Rogers said it was a difficult decision, explaining "The decision at a studio level, we took very, very seriously. We knew it would, in the short-term, disappoint fans.”
"We’re about growing our IP, this is a long-term decision. We’re going to take Tomb Raider up to the next level," added Rogers. "With Microsoft’s belief, passion and sort of muscle to help us deliver, we really think this is going to be an awesome game that people will enjoy for years and years to come."
Rise of the Tomb Raider was controversially announced as an Xbox exclusive at Gamescom last year, before more recent revelations that the exclusive was timed only.
Despite cutting out large numbers from audiences, console exclusive deals can provide developers with much-needed help in the form of technical support and additional marketing.
Rise of the Tomb Raider releases on Xbox One and Xbox 360 this November; on Windows 10 in early 2016; and on PS4 in late 2016.
