Gil Kenan will direct the big-screen adaptation of indie game success story Five Nights at Freddy's, according to a Deadline report.

The director recently released a remake of family horror classic Poltergeist, and was nominated for an Academy Award for the animated Monster House.

Five Nights at Freddy's' tale of a security guard trying to survive in a kids' restaurant chain inhabited by creepy, murderous animatronics seems a fine choice for a screen adaptation.

“The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” said series creator Scott Cawthorn.

Said producer Seth Grahame-Smith, “We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie.”

Meanwhile, in an open letter today, Cawthorn commented on his unexpected success, exhorting fans: "Make sure that you are next year’s big success story. Don’t fall into the pit of people who have given up on making something of themselves, and make sure you make EVERYTHING out of yourself."

The Five Nights At Freddy's series is available on Steam and the iOS App Store; the movie has no release date set.
