Racist remarks he made almost a decade ago have seen Hulk Hogan fired from the WWE and removed from upcoming wrestling title WWE 2K16.

He has also been removed from the WWE Hall of Fame, and almost all traces of him have been scrubbed from the official WWE website.

According to TMZ, eight years ago Hogan called a black man his daughter was dating a n*gger, and later stated, "I am a racist, to a point".

The twist? Hogan made these statements during the filming of a sex tape that was later posted online without permission by Gawker, and Hogan’s words have only come to light as a consequence of litigation between the two parties.

Over the weekend, 2K confirmed to Polygon that Hogan wouldn’t appear in WWE 2K16.

"We are highly respectful of the way that our partners choose to run their business and manage our partnerships accordingly," the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Hogan apologised for his remarks in a statement to People magazine.

"Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation," said Hogan.

"It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologise for having done it.

"This is not who I am. I believe very strongly that every person in the world is important and should not be treated differently based on race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or otherwise," he continued.

"I am disappointed with myself that I used language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs."

In that same article, an attorney for Hogan told People that Hogan hadn't been fired but instead had resigned from the WWE because "he didn't want to put them or his family through this".
