Esports organisation ESL is partnering with two anti-doping agencies to draft and enforce an anti-performance enhancing drugs policy across all of its tournaments.
ESL is working with WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) and NADA (Nationale Anti Doping Agentur) on the policy, which will be enforced in all competitions organised, hosted, or produced by ESL.
The move comes in the wake of admissions from two CS:GO pros that drug use is common at pro events.
According to the ESL, the policy will be fair and feasible, and will respect the privacy of players whilst simultaneously providing conclusive testing results.
“The goal of this program is to ensure players are provided with information and structural support to help them manage the physical and emotional pressure that the highest level of competitive gaming puts on many of them,” said the ESL.
“In the meantime, we also wish to take immediate action to ensure the company values of exemplary sportsmanship and integrity are guarded.”
Drug testing will be done via skin swabs, and the first randomised tests will take place at the ESL One Cologne event this August.
“The growing visibility and popularity of esports, as well as increasing prize pools make it not only more tempting for teams and players to break the rules, but also more damaging to our sport as a whole when they do,” the ESL continued.
“ESL has an ongoing commitment to safeguarding the integrity of our competitions and providing a fair playground for professional players.”
