A new-ish version of Minecraft is on its way, this time for Windows 10.

Microsoft announced Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition at Minecon in London over the weekend, and pledged that it would be free for those that already own the game, and US$10 for everyone else while still in beta.

The beta kicks off on July 29.

Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition is based on Minecraft: Pocket Edition which is written in C++ rather than Java, and has released on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone since its debut in 2011.

It supports all controllers, Xbox Live is not required, and Mojang is aiming for feature parity with other versions of the game.

“It's compatible, but the 7 people limit is only there because it's PE!” said Mojang on Reddit.

“It's just that there isn't a dedicated server right now.”

Other features of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition:

Multiplayer for up to seven friends through local multiplayer or with your Xbox Live friends online
Play online and local multiplayer with other Pocket Edition players thanks to a free update, due to arrive soon after launch
Supports controller, touch, and keyboard/mouse
Record and share gameplay highlights with built-in GameDVR.
Built-in player feedback mechanisms for the beta
Chickens, zombies, pigs, boats, armed skeletons, potatoes, zombies, baby squids, enchantment tables, villagers, naked sheep, iron golems, potions, ghasts, pickaxes, carrots, and “all the weird and wonderful goodness you’ve come to expect from Minecraft

“Just like the first release of Minecraft all those years ago, this version will develop and evolve over time with the help of your feedback,” said Mojang chief word officer Owen Hill on Xbox Wire.

“That’s why it has ‘Beta’ in the title – because it’s not quite finished, and will become even more fun over time. Just like the other versions of Minecraft, all future updates will be free. We spoil you. We really do.”

Microsoft said it will support both PC versions of the game.
