Numerous signs are pointing towards PS4 architect and Knack designer Mark Cerny taking over development on the long-awaited The Last Guardian.

On June 8, Just Add Water founder Stewart Gilray started the rumour on the PS Nation podcast, saying "a certain somebody" was taking over on the game. Said Gilray, "that certain somebody is the guy who helped out with the architecture of the Vita and PS4. I'm led to believe that he's — his team is now running Last Guardian to finish."

Decoding Gilray's innuendos, it's known that Cerny was lead system architect on the PS4, and Shuhei Yoshida said at Gamescom 2013 that he was instrumental in building the Vita as well. Cerny also led design on PS4 launch title Knack, so leading a game's development isn't new to him either.

Any news on The Last Guardian will be a boon to weary PlayStation gamers, who have been waiting over six years for the follow-up to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The Guardian (no relation) recently published an article claiming "this will be the year that Team Ico finally presents [The Last Guardian]," which could either be seen as optimism or inside knowledge. Sony has always insisted the game hasn't been cancelled; perhaps this year will be the year they finally put their demo where their mouth is.
