A new report out of Japan states that Nintendo’s upcoming NX console will be based on the Android operating system.

Japanese business wire service Nikkei published the report (translated by Kotaku and NeoGAF), which credits an unnamed insider with providing the information.

According to the anonymous source, the idea is to make the NX a more open platform that allows for easier ports from third-party developers.

An Android-based system would also allow NX games to be easily ported to mobile, a market Nintendo is finally entering after years of speculation it should do so.

Little is known about the NX, except that it will be “a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept” according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, and that it will feature a new membership service.
