Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer BioWare turned 20 on Saturday.

The studio was founded by medical doctors Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip in Edmonton, Canada in 1995, and after a mech sim debut in Shattered Steel, it went on to create some of the most well-known RPGs in the history of gaming.

Its impressive run of top-quality titles includes Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series', and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

In 2007 the studio was acquired by EA from private equity firm Elevation Partners, and in 2012 both Muzyka and Zeschuk announced their retirement from the gaming industry.

“This decision isn’t without significant pain and regret,” wrote Zeschuk at the time, “but it’s also something I know I need to do, for myself and my family”.

“I’ve reached an unexpected point in my life where I no longer have the passion that I once did for the company, for the games, and for the challenge of creation.”

The studio is currently working on a fourth Mass Effect game, along with an unannounced Star Wars title.
