The design of a Tekken 7 character has drawn the ire of the Filipino government.
Filipino site GMA News is reporting that the country's National Commission for Culture and the Arts has criticised the game’s Filipino character, Josie Rizal, for not being properly representative of the country’s inhabitants.
The exact issue the government has with Josie isn’t outlined, but a representative said the commission may look for ways to “correct” her design.
"It's hard for us to prevent other countries from making characters like this because Philippines is very popular around the world," said the commission’s Dr. Leodenito Cañete.
Josie Rizal is named after one of the country's most important heroes (Filipino nationalist José Rizal), and wears the red, blue, yellow, and white of the country's flag.
Kotaku reports that Philippine artist and poet Adonis Durado is also unhappy with Josie’s design.
"The problem with Josie Rizal’s character is too obvious: it doesn’t have any trace of Filipino-ness-neither in her physical attributes nor in her outfit," he said.
"If her fighting style is purportedly eskrima, where are the arnis sticks? So the Filipino-inspired name is simply a token."
However, several people claiming to be Filipino have spoken out against the government and Durado in the comments on Kotaku.
“The only ones who are calling this an issue are the older generation, who unfortunately, have slightly bigoted beliefs,” wrote one.
Added another: “I am ashamed of how Filipinos overreact to anything and everything Filipino-related when portrayed by other countries.”
And a third: “I'm a Filipino, and I'm ashamed of how NCCA reacted on this stuff… Filipino organizations always poke their noses on minor stuff they shouldn't be wasting their time on. We have more important matters here to be dealt with, leave Tekken alone. it's just a game.”
