YouTube will soon relaunch its livestreaming platform with a renewed focus on live gaming and esports, according to Daily Dot sources.

The report follows YouTube owner Google’s failed attempt last year to acquire streaming giant Twitch for US$1b.

“Gaming and esports in particular are going to be a big driving force for the new-look YouTube Live," one source said.

"There’ll be huge opportunities for established streamers and organisations soon and I would say that the record numbers of esports viewers are only going to grow when Google start promoting and partnering with these events.”

According to the source, YouTube has already recruited 50 engineers who possess expertise in the streaming industry.

YouTube’s first foray into livestreaming was back in 2010 when it broadcast cricket matches from the Indian Premier League, but the service withered and disappeared completely last year.

It has also experimented with eSports, broadcasting the League of Legends Championship Series since 2013 in a non-exclusive deal.

A YouTube Live announcement is expected from the company at E3 this June.
