There are more than 125 million active Steam users worldwide, says Valve.

The figure represents a new record for the PC gaming platform. Valve did not specify what it considered to be an "active" user.

The platform now has more than 4500 games, and more than 400 million pieces of user-generated content.

Steam also announced a new record for concurrent users: 8.9 million. The number was hit earlier this month.

The news comes just days before Valve will showcase a new VR headset at the Game Developers Conference.

"At GDC 2015, we’ll be giving demos of the refined Steam Controller, new living room devices, and a previously-unannounced SteamVR hardware system," said the company.
