Square Enix has called on independent developers to pitch game ideas based on its Gex, Fear Effect and Anachronox intellectual properties.
The call has been made for the publisher's Collective program, in which the company greenlights ideas and then presents them to the community for feedback. After four weeks, Square Enix decides whether or not to proceed with crowdfunding via Kickstarter.
So far, 36 original game ideas have been published by Collective, but only three have been successfully funded on Kickstarter: Sand Sailor Studio's Black - The Fall, Kitfox Games' Moon Hunters, and Sushee's Goetia.
In the cases of Gex, Fear Effect and Anachronox the publisher is looking for different ideas that aren't necessarily straight sequels.
"We’d love to see different takes on those universes," said Square Enix in a blog post. "What would Gex look like in a side-scrolling adventure, or a turn-based strategy? So feel free to mash up genres, and get creative."
Should any indie developers pitch winning ideas, Square Enix will take 5 percent of the total crowdfunding capital raised, and a distribution fee of 10 percent net sales revenue. It will charge a 10 percent license fee for the use of its intellectual property.
