Microsoft has announced that Xbox One exclusives can be streamed to Windows 10 PCs and tablets via a new app. The tech giant also announced new augmented reality technology in the pipeline.

The Xbox One app displays friends' gamertags, allows you to comment and message friends and allows for voice chat across devices. The app lists your Steam games alongside your Xbox One games. Xbox One games can be streamed over a local network. It includes DVR technology that enables users to capture gameplay footage, edit and share it online.

In addition, the app will allow for cross-platform play between select titles. Lionhead's Lauran Carter demonstrated this with the studio's upcoming title Fable Legends, now also confirmed for PC.

To demonstrate the app's ability to stream Xbox One exclusives to any Windows 10 PC or tablet demonstration Microsoft showed Forza Motorsport 5 being played on a Surface Pro 3. Xbox head Phil Spencer said the Microsoft plans to “treat Xbox gaming on Windows 10 with a passion and energy” equal to that which it shows gaming on Xbox One.

Finally, Microsoft showed a DirectX 12 benchmark which it said runs much smoother than DirectX11 while only using half the power.

Microsoft also unveiled HoloLens at the event, which it described as the first augmented reality holographic computing platform. HoloLens comes with a set of APIs that will enable developers to create holograms in the real world.

The holograms will be visible through the lens, overlaying the user's normal vision, much like augmented reality.

The HoloLens head unit, which looks like a bulky pair of sunglasses, can be used without connection to a phone or a PC.

The device "sees" what the user sees, understands voice commands and gestures, and responds accordingly, said Microsoft.

While still only at the proof of concept stage, Microsoft suggested HoloLens could be used for design, entertainment and educational purposes. The company used Minecraft as one demonstration of how HoloLens could work.

The platform will be familiar to Windows 7 users, and will include a start menu and task bar.

Microsoft is ditching Internet Explorer. The new operating system will come with a new Internet browser codenamed Project Spartan.

Spartan will come with Cortana, a personal assistant much like Apple's Siri.

Windows 10 will be released this year.
