New evidence suggests that a competitive Counter-Strike match between two professional teams was fixed.
The match between two North American teams, iBUYPOWER and NetcodeGuides.com, took place last August during CEVO Professional Season 5.
iBUYPOWER, generally considered the stronger team, lost the match 4-16. During the match the team exhibited peculiar behaviour such as going for risky knife kills and laughing when a team member was killed.
Now, Daily Dot has published a text message conversation between a professional player Derek “dboorn” Boorn and his former girlfriend Ashley Leboeuf, confirming that the match was fixed and that he was involved. Boorn plays for another team, Torqued. Leboeuf's texts were denounced as fake on Reddit, however Daily Dot says it has verified their authenticity.
“It really pains me to do something like this to someone I care about,” said Leboeuf. “But I can’t stand that the community respects these players when they do things like this. Amateur players look up to them, and they just use that to get away with anything they want.”
Much of the betting on Counter-Strike occurs on the site CSGO Lounge. Players bet on matches with in-game items that have real-world value. One well-known member of the community, Duc “cud” Pham, is reported to have placed multiple large bets on the match across multiple accounts. Through bets on the match, Pham is reported to have made nearly US$1200 on each account.
Another player, Shahzeb “ShahZam” Khan, planned to bet on iBUYPOWER until he was privately advised by NetcodeGuides.com founder Casey Foster not to do so.
