Last year was not a good one for games, according to review aggregation site Metacritic.

The site’s breakdown of metascores in 2014 shows that most platforms had a middling-to-poor year, with few standout games released.

Across all platforms, only 14 games released in 2014 scored 90 or higher – the lowest number since 2006.

On current-gen consoles, nine games scored 90 or higher, but only three were new titles rather than ports.

This year's highest-scoring new release – Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – scored 92, much lower than prior champions Grand Theft Auto V (97), The Walking Dead (95), Batman: Arkham City (96), and Super Mario Galaxy 2 (97).

Between the Xbox One and Xbox 360 there were just two 90+ releases – the worst ever showing for Microsoft's consoles. However, this is partly explained by reviewers consistently favouring the PlayStation 4 when choosing a platform to use for evaluating games.

That same phenomenon also explains why the PlayStation 4 has five 90+ games. However, that same console also had a mere four 75+ exclusive titles – the lowest among the current-gen consoles.

The Wii U may have had a better year than most, with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Hyrule Warriors, but the average metascore of its games decreased six points on 2013’s total to finish on 66.8, and it also had the lowest percentage of games with positive reviews (39%), and the highest percentage of games with negative reviews (15%) out of the three new consoles.

2014 was a dismal year for games, says Metacritic

PC had 132 games receive a 75 or higher – the highest total for a single platform for any year in recent memory, according to Metacritic.

However, just one of those games achieved a 90 or higher: the PC version of Dark Souls II. Last year, five games crossed that threshold.

Metacritic has more detail across these categories, as well as information on handhelds and last-gen consoles onsite now.
