A vehicle combat game called Scraps is one of the first Kiwi-made projects to launch on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.
In Scraps, players build custom combat vehicles from the chassis up, and go head-to-head against opponents who have built their own vehicles with “realistic physics [that] support your horrible design decisions.”
Auckland-based independent developer Bill Borman cites games such as Twisted Metal, Interstate ‘76, Stratosphere: Conquest Of The Skies, and Lego Racers as inspiration for Scraps, but adds these titles were all missing something:
“I want to be able to build a car that sucks,” writes Borman on the Scraps Kickstarter. “A car that falls over whenever it corners or only has enough power to fire its guns once a minute. I want each component you place to actually have a function, and have a physical effect. Not to the point of adding needless complexity to the game, like having to wire everything together; just obvious things, like your vehicle being lop-sided if you put all your guns on one side.”
The Scraps Kickstarter launched on November 22nd. At the time of writing, $4864 has been pledged towards Borman’s $23,000 goal.
