The first title from new talent-rich indie Hinterland Studios has been funded via Kickstarter.

The Long Dark – an episodic post-disaster survival sim set in the aftermath of a geomagnetic super storm that has destroyed North America's technology infrastructure – attracted US$256,217 (NZ$304,031) in pledges, easily crossing its US$200,000 goal.

In doing so, it also surpassed a couple of stretch goals, so all backers will receive a digital graphic novel, and the game’s soundtrack will double in size.

Hinterland comprises an enviable number of high-profile triple-A developers, including veterans from Relic Entertainment, Volition, BioWare, and others.

The studio has recruited the voice actors of both versions of Commander Shepard (Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer), Solid Snake (David Haytor), and Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s Adam Jensen (Elias Toufexis) to work on the game.

The Long Dark is due next October for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. It also features Oculus Rift support.
